Fundraising is far more than collecting donations. It is about creating opportunities, building communities, funding life-changing projects, and giving people living with Parkinson’s access to experiences, support, and hope.
For organisations like Sport Parkinson’s, fundraising plays a vital role in ensuring that people affected by Parkinson’s can continue to stay active, connected, and inspired through sport and physical activity.
As awareness around Parkinson’s continues to grow, so too does the need for meaningful initiatives that improve quality of life, support mental wellbeing, and encourage people to keep moving with others. None of this is possible without the support of fundraisers, partners, sponsors, and communities coming together behind a shared mission.
What Is Fundraising?
Fundraising is the process of gathering financial support to help organisations deliver their goals and make a positive impact.
For charities and community organisations, fundraising can come from:
Donations
Sponsorships
Corporate partnerships
Community events
Sporting challenges
Grant funding
Campaigns and awareness initiatives
But fundraising is not simply about money. It is about people investing in a cause they believe in. Every pound raised helps organisations expand their reach, deliver new opportunities, and provide support where it is needed most. For Sport Parkinson’s, fundraising directly impacts the lives of people living with Parkinson’s every single day.
Why Fundraising Is Essential for Sport Parkinson’s
Parkinson’s affects people physically, mentally, and emotionally. Staying active has been shown to play a hugely important role in helping people manage symptoms, maintain mobility, and improve overall wellbeing.
Sport Parkinson’s exists to make sport and physical activity more accessible to people living with Parkinson’s while building a strong and supportive community around them. Fundraising allows the organisation to continue growing that mission.
Reaching More of the Parkinson’s Community
One of the biggest goals for Sport Parkinson’s is reaching more people affected by Parkinson’s and their families across the UK and beyond. Many individuals living with Parkinson’s can feel isolated after diagnosis. Sporting activities and community events provide more than exercise, they create friendships, confidence, routine, and support networks.
Fundraising helps Sport Parkinson’s to expand our community outreach, increase Parkinson's awareness, support initiatives across the UK and engage more even more participants. The more funds raised, the more people the organisation can reach.
Funding New Research Projects
Research into Parkinson’s remains incredibly important. While sport and exercise are proven to support wellbeing and symptom management, ongoing research continues to explore how physical activity can improve long-term outcomes for people living with Parkinson’s.
Fundraising allows Sport Parkinson’s to contribute towards future research initiatives that could help improve understanding, treatment, and support for the Parkinson’s community. Every fundraiser and every partnership contributes towards creating a better future for people affected by the condition.
Supporting New Sporting Activities
One of the most exciting parts of Sport Parkinson’s is the variety of activities and opportunities available to the community.
Fundraising helps finance and expand sporting activities delivered by organisations and groups within the Parkinson’s community through our Healthy and Strong Grant Fund helping more people access inclusive and enjoyable experiences.
These activities may include:
Walking football
Golf sessions
Cycling groups
Fitness programmes
Exercise classes
Community sports days
Walking groups
Physical activity is not one-size-fits-all. By funding a wide range of opportunities, Sport Parkinson’s helps people find activities they genuinely enjoy and can continue long term.
Making Events Possible
Large-scale events are at the heart of what makes Sport Parkinson’s so inspiring. Events bring communities together, raise awareness, create unforgettable experiences, and showcase what people living with Parkinson’s can achieve.
Fundraising helps support events such as:
Try-Athlon
Golf Academies
Football Tournaments
Charity Golf Days
Community Challenges
Awareness Campaigns
These events not only raise funds but also build confidence, celebrate achievements, and inspire others within the Parkinson’s community. For many participants, these experiences become life-changing moments.
The Power of Community Fundraisers
One of the most powerful things about fundraising is that it often starts with individuals deciding to do something extraordinary for a cause they care about.
Many people from our community have been fundraising for Sport Parkinson’s over the last 12 months, here are some examples of our amazing supporters; Bev and Howard raised money for us instead of receiving wedding gifts, Luke, Dan and Rob completed 6 full rounds of golf in 24 hours, Josh is completing four 10 km runs, Dorothy jumped out of a plane, Golf Captains at Saddleworth Golf Club and the golf Pro's at Surbiton Golf Club both chose Sport Parkinson's as their charity of the year.
Ciaran and Lucy’s Journey Around the World
Ciaran and Lucy are preparing to take on an incredible challenge, cycling around the world over an 18-month period in aid of raising funds for Sport Parkinson’s.
But this is not your typical cycling story. Ciaran comes from a background in elite sport, while Lucy had never cycled more than 60km before preparing for this challenge. Together, they are leaving behind their jobs and normal routines to take on an adventure that will test them physically, mentally, and emotionally as they attempt to average more than 100km every single day for over a year. Their journey is about far more than cycling.
It is about showing the reality of chasing adventure as a couple, stepping outside comfort zones, and proving that extraordinary experiences can be accessible to ordinary people. Importantly, Lucy’s role within the project also brings something incredibly powerful to the story. While many cycling expeditions are male-dominated, this journey aims to grow Lucy’s platform and inspire more women to embrace adventure, endurance challenges, and travel.
Challenges like this are only possible through partnerships and sponsorship support.
Ciaran and Lucy are currently looking for partners to help fund their expedition so they can maximise the amount raised for Sport Parkinson’s once they are on the road.
While their platforms may still be growing, the opportunity for sponsors is to become part of the journey from the very beginning. As their story grows, audiences will not only remember the adventure itself, they will remember the organisations and businesses that helped make it happen.
Final Thoughts

Fundraising is the heartbeat of organisations like Sport Parkinson’s. It enables communities to grow, supports vital research, creates inclusive sporting opportunities, and gives people living with Parkinson’s the chance to experience connection, confidence, and achievement through sport.
From local football tournaments to major events like Try-Athlon, every initiative begins with people choosing to support a cause that matters.
And now, through Ciaran and Lucy’s incredible journey around the world, Sport Parkinson’s has another inspiring opportunity to raise awareness, build community, and make a real difference. Because every mile they cycle is helping move the Parkinson’s community forward.
