Inclusive Sport Isn't a Luxury – It's a Lifeline

As this year's Cairns Cup (the disability equivalent of the Ryder Cup) has come to an end, in San Roque, Spain, we're incredibly proud to see our co-founder, Charlie Appleyard MBE, representing team Europe as Vice-Captain on one of the biggest stages in disability golf. We’re delighted to celebrate Team Europe’s first-ever victory, winning by an incredible 18-6 last week.

Led by Kris Aves as captain alongside Mike Jones (Wales) and Charlie, Team Europe produced a fantastic performance from start to finish. More than just a victory, this was a powerful reminder that disability is no barrier to competing and succeeding at the very highest level of sport.

Kris was delighted to win as the first European captain to achieve the honour!

Congratulations to everyone involved. What a phenomenal achievement.

At Sport Parkinson's, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to enjoy sport and physical activity, regardless of their age, ability or diagnosis. For people living with Parkinson's, exercise isn't simply about keeping fit, it's one of the most effective ways to help manage symptoms, maintain independence, improve mental wellbeing and stay connected with others. Yet, despite the proven benefits of physical activity, many people still struggle to find opportunities that are welcoming, accessible and tailored to their needs.

That's why inclusive sport is so important and why we're committed to creating more opportunities for people living with Parkinson's to get active, challenge themselves and be part of a supportive community.

More Than Exercise

Living with Parkinson's can bring daily challenges, from changes in balance and mobility to fatigue, low mood and confidence. Joining a sports session can feel daunting, especially if you've never considered yourself "sporty."  But inclusive sport changes that narrative.  It's not about being the fastest, strongest or most competitive person on the pitch or course. It's about creating an environment where everyone feels they belong, where achievements are celebrated, friendships are formed and people rediscover the joy of movement.

Time and time again, we hear the same thing from our community:

"I came for the exercise, but I stayed for the people and the positive feeling I’m left with at the end."

That sense of belonging is just as important as the physical benefits.

Events That Bring Our Community Together

At Sport Parkinson's, we're proud to organise events that don't just encourage activity, they create memorable experiences, ones that last a lifetime and encourage our community to keep coming back for more.

The World's Largest Parkinson's Walking Football Tournament

Our Walking Football Tournament has become the largest Parkinson's walking football tournament in the world.  Every year, teams travel from across the UK and beyond to compete, reconnect with friends and demonstrate that Parkinson's doesn't define what they can achieve.  The atmosphere is incredible. There's competition, of course, but there's also laughter, encouragement and a real sense of community. Whether you're playing, volunteering or cheering from the sidelines, everyone is part of something special.

The Sport Parkinson's Try-Athlon at Twickenham Stoop

Not everyone wants to compete in traditional sporting events, which is why our Try-Athlon continues to grow in popularity.  Held at the iconic Twickenham Stoop, the event encourages participants to challenge themselves in a fun, supportive environment, proving that taking part and trying everything which is available can have an incredible impact on joining other sporting activities, regularly, close to home.  Each person attending, finds an activity to take part in, with over 25 different activities to choose from, it would be hard not to.

Golf Academies at Hagley and Surbiton

Golf is becoming an increasingly popular activity within the Parkinson's community.  Our monthly Golf Academies held at Hagley Golf Club and Surbiton Golf Club, in the Spring and Summer, provide the perfect introduction for complete beginners while also helping experienced golfers improve their game.  These academies aren't just about learning to play golf. They're about building confidence, improving coordination and balance, enjoying the outdoors and creating lasting friendships in a supportive environment.  It's wonderful to see participants who never imagined they could play golf now looking forward to their monthly sessions.

The Five Nations Golf Tournament at The Belfry

One of the highlights of our sporting calendar is the Five Nations Golf Tournament at The Belfry.  Bringing together golfers from across five nations; England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and this year, France; the event celebrates both sporting achievement and international friendship.  Playing at one of the world's most iconic golf venues is an unforgettable experience, but what makes the event truly special is seeing people living with Parkinson's inspire one another, both on and off the course.

But We Don't Want to Stop Here...

As proud as we are of these events, we know there is so much more we could do.

Inclusive sport shouldn't be limited by geography or opportunity. We want more people living with Parkinson's to experience the confidence, friendships and improved wellbeing that come from taking part.

So we're asking our community:

What would you like to see next?

Would you enjoy:

  • More regional sporting festivals?

  • Inclusive cycling events?

  • Pickleball or racket sports?

  • Family fun days?

  • More golf academies across the UK?  Would your Golf Club like to host one?

We're passionate about growing opportunities for everyone living with Parkinson's, but the best ideas come from the people they're designed for.

Tell Us What You Think

  • What activities you'd like to see.

  • Where you'd like us to hold events.  Do you have a venue in mind?

  • Whether you'd like to volunteer or help organise local sessions.

  • Any barriers that stop you taking part.

Together, we can make inclusive sport available to even more people living with Parkinson's.
